The power of showing up: IREM® Property Managers’ Day on Capitol Hill
On September 23, also known as Property Managers’ Day, IREM® will convene in Washington, D.C., for its annual Congressional Briefing, bringing together members and industry experts to engage directly with policymakers on key priorities. While the briefing offers an important platform to communicate IREM’s perspective, the greatest impact is achieved through focused, one-on-one meetings with legislators and their staff on Capitol Hill.
As 2026 IREM President Mindy Gronbeck, CPM®, CCIM, emphasizes: “Our members are on the front lines of real estate management every day. When they meet with lawmakers, they bring a level of practical insight that simply cannot be replicated. It’s what helps turn policy ideas into informed decisions.”
IREM members are invited to join Mindy and other IREM leaders in Washington, D.C. to meet directly with federal legislators and their offices during the annual Hill briefing. These meetings are where preparation and purpose come together. When a clear message, real-world context, and practical experience come together, participation turns into true influence.
Building on the priorities outlined during the briefing, participants can extend their impact by connecting directly with elected officials in a focused and intentional way. When advocacy is prepared, informed, and aligned, it not only advances IREM’s policy priorities but also strengthens relationships and reinforces the industry’s credibility on Capitol Hill.
Together, the Congressional Briefing and Capitol Hill meetings amplify IREM’s collective voice and ensure that the real estate management profession is effectively represented in federal decision-making.
A brief overview of how to conduct impactful meetings is provided below, and members are encouraged to visit “Meet with legislators” for a comprehensive guide, including how to identify and connect with elected officials.
Why your voice matters
Members of Congress and their staff are responsible for navigating hundreds of complex policy issues. They rely heavily on input from constituents to understand how legislation affects businesses, housing providers, and communities.
As an IREM member, you bring a unique and credible perspective:
-
You manage properties and people every day
-
You see how federal policies translate into operational challenges or opportunities
-
You represent a broader industry voice that is often underrepresented in policy discussions
When you show up and share your experience, you’re helping policymakers make informed decisions and ensuring the property management industry has a seat at the table.
Turning engagement into impact
Participating in IREM’s Congressional Briefing and Capitol Hill meetings is more than a one-day activity; it’s an opportunity for members to help shape the future of the real estate management industry.
As Mindy confirms: “Advocacy is one of the most important ways our members can lead beyond their day-to-day roles. By sharing their experiences and building relationships on Capitol Hill, they help ensure our industry’s voice is heard where it matters most.”
By showing up prepared, sharing your story, and making clear, actionable requests, you play a direct role in ensuring that federal policies reflect the realities of property management. Just as importantly, you help position IREM members as trusted, credible partners in the policymaking process.
